Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install MoniThor?
Download MoniThor from the Mac App Store for $4.99, or purchase the Direct version from our website for $7.99. The App Store version installs like any other Mac app. The Direct version comes as a standard .dmg file. Drag MoniThor to your Applications folder and launch it from there.
What is the difference between the App Store and Direct version?
The App Store version ($4.99) is fully sandboxed and requires zero special permissions. It monitors CPU, RAM, GPU, battery, network, and disk using standard macOS APIs. The Direct version ($7.99) includes everything in the App Store version plus a privileged SMC helper that provides hardware sensor data: CPU temperature, GPU temperature, battery temperature, fan speeds in RPM, and power draw in watts.
Does MoniThor work on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs?
Yes. MoniThor runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 and later) and Intel Macs. On Apple Silicon, MoniThor automatically detects and labels Performance Cores (P-Cores) and Efficiency Cores (E-Cores) separately in the per-core CPU view.
Which macOS versions are supported?
MoniThor supports macOS 13 (Ventura) and later, including macOS 14 Sonoma, macOS 15 Sequoia, and macOS 26 Tahoe.
How do I show or hide specific metrics in the menu bar?
Open MoniThor Settings (right-click the menu bar icon or press Cmd+Shift+,). Under Menu Bar Customization, toggle each metric on or off individually. You can also change the display mode for each metric (text only, graph only, graph plus text, or icon plus text), adjust the sparkline width, and reorder the metrics by dragging them.
Can I move the compact view panel?
Yes. Click the MoniThor icon in the menu bar to open the compact view, then drag the panel to any position on any connected monitor. The panel remembers its position between sessions.
How do I open the expanded dashboard?
Hold the Option key and click the MoniThor icon in the menu bar, or press the global keyboard shortcut Cmd+Shift+O (configurable in Settings). The dashboard is resizable and supports a responsive grid that adapts from 3 columns to 2 to 1 based on the window width. Press Escape to close it.
Why does MoniThor show different CPU usage than Activity Monitor?
MoniThor and Activity Monitor may show slightly different values because they sample CPU usage at different intervals. MoniThor updates every 1, 2, or 5 seconds (configurable in Settings), while Activity Monitor uses its own fixed interval. Both tools read from the same macOS kernel data, so the overall trends will match closely.
Does MoniThor collect any data or phone home?
No. MoniThor does not collect, store, transmit, or share any personal data. All system monitoring data is processed locally on your Mac and never leaves your device. The app contains no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, and no tracking of any kind. The only network request the app makes is fetching your public IP address from a public API, and this can be disabled by hiding the Network section.
How do I set MoniThor to launch at login?
Open MoniThor Settings and enable "Launch at Login." This uses Apple's official SMAppService framework, so it appears in System Settings under General > Login Items alongside other apps configured to start automatically.
Can I change the accent color?
Yes. MoniThor offers 8 accent color themes: purple (default), blue, teal, green, yellow, orange, pink, and red. You can switch colors in Settings or directly from the expanded dashboard header. The app automatically picks a complementary secondary color for each theme.
How do I get a refund?
For the App Store version, refunds are handled through Apple. Open the Apple App Store, go to your account, find MoniThor in your purchase history, and select "Report a Problem." For the Direct version, contact us at support@monithor.dev within 14 days of purchase with your order details.
MoniThor is using too much CPU. What should I do?
MoniThor is designed to be lightweight, typically using less than 1% CPU. If you notice higher usage, try increasing the refresh interval in Settings from 1 second to 2 or 5 seconds. This reduces how often MoniThor polls system metrics. You can also hide sections you do not use in the compact view and overlay to reduce the amount of data being processed.
I purchased the Direct version. How do I get updates?
The Direct version includes free updates within version 1. You will receive update notifications within the app when a new version is available. Major version upgrades (for example, version 2) may be offered as a separate purchase at a discounted upgrade price.
